Let’s be real: if you’ve ever tried to guide a group of kids into stillness… you know it can feel like herding very flexible cats. 😅
But the good news? Yoga for kids doesn’t need to be quiet or serious to be effective. In fact, the more fun it is, the more they’ll actually want to do it.

Here are some of my favorite ways to keep it playful, engaging, and joy-filled — whether you’re teaching in a classroom, studio, or your own living room.

🎶 1. Music = Magic

A good playlist can turn a sluggish group into eager little yogis in seconds. Here are a few types of songs I love using:

  • Follow-the-movement songs (like “Yoga Clock” or “Going on a Dragon Hunt”)
  • Calm background music for breathwork or rest time
  • Sing-along mantras for grounding and connection

Pro tip: Let kids choose the song sometimes — it builds ownership and excitement.

🎲 2. Yoga Games They’ll Ask For Again

Games are the secret sauce. You’re teaching breath, balance, and body awareness — and they just think they’re playing.

Some go-to favorites:

  • Yoga Freeze Dance – Strike a pose when the music stops
  • Yogi Says – Like Simon Says, but with cat-cows and tree poses 🌳
  • Yoga Memory Cards – Flip and match, then do the pose together
  • Pass the Pose – Sit in a circle and one child shows a pose, the next copies and adds one, and so on…

Bonus: These also work beautifully in birthday parties or group events!

🌈 3. Props I Love (and Kids Do Too)

Props help kids visualize breath, explore movement, and stay engaged. Some of my most-loved items:

  • Silk scarves – for breathing, dancing, or making poses magical
  • Yoga pose cards – great for stations or self-led practice
  • Breathing balls (expandable Hoberman spheres) – for teaching deep belly breaths
  • Stickers or stones – for mindful breathing or focusing in rest pose
  • Stuffed animals – place on their bellies to help them watch their breath rise and fall

Honestly? A good scarf or squish toy can make even the wiggliest child excited about stillness.

🧺 4. Create a “Yoga Basket”

Put a few scarves, a deck of yoga cards, a favorite playlist, and a cuddly toy in a basket. Keep it in the classroom or next to your mat at home. It becomes a little toolbox for connection, and kids LOVE having their own special space to grab from.

💡 5. Let Them Lead

This might be the most powerful (and fun) tip of all:
Let the kids take the lead sometimes.

Ask:

  • “Which pose should we do next?”
  • “Can you show us how your body wants to move today?”
  • “Can you lead our rest time with your breathing buddy?”

Empower them, and the practice becomes theirs.

Yoga with kids doesn’t have to look like silence and stillness. It can look like giggles, scarves in the air, music flowing, and wobbly tree poses. And that’s perfect.
